An Environmental Humanities major provides the skills to examine, evaluate, and participate in modern environmental discussions. You'll develop a nuanced perspective on the societal frameworks that shape our encounters with ecological challenges like global warming, biodiversity decline, adaptation strategies, resource depletion, and environmental catastrophes. This program illuminates how cultural factors - including historical narratives, ethical frameworks, and societal values - mold our interactions with the natural world.
You'll study influential humanities perspectives in environmental discourse and their real-world impacts on policy-making, conflict resolution, and problem-solving approaches. The curriculum examines visions for sustainable futures, Indigenous land philosophies, and the historical evolution of human-nature relationships. This interdisciplinary major integrates coursework from International Studies, Philosophy, History, Indigenous Studies, Cultural Studies, Sociology, English, Contemporary Arts, and Geography. It applies core humanities competencies - analytical reasoning, creative problem-solving, social equity considerations, and cultural literacy - to pressing environmental concerns. The Environmental Humanities field has emerged in response to 21st century ecological emergencies including climate disruption, dwindling resources, wildlife extinction, displacement crises, environmental disasters, global inequities, and climate migration challenges.
