New Zealand will introduce a new six-month Short-term Graduate Work Visa and expand eligibility for its Post Study Work Visa (PSWV) from November 2026, creating additional pathways for international students seeking work opportunities after graduation.

The changes are designed to help graduates transition into employment while ensuring that post-study work pathways align with New Zealand's skills and workforce needs.

New six-month graduate work visa

From 16 November 2026, eligible international graduates will be able to apply for a new Short-term Graduate Work Visa.

The visa will provide six months of open work rights, giving graduates time to search for employment and potentially move into longer-term work visas such as the Accredited Employer Work Visa.

The visa is aimed at students who complete qualifications that do not qualify for a Post Study Work Visa.

To be eligible, students must have completed a full-time qualification at NZQCF Level 5, 6, or 7 in New Zealand, studied for at least 24 weeks, and meet other immigration requirements. Applications must be submitted within three months of the expiry of their student visa.

The visa can only be granted once and cannot be extended.

More opportunities for graduate diploma students

The biggest change for many international students is the expansion of Post Study Work Visa eligibility to certain graduate diploma programmes.

From November 2026, graduates who complete a Level 7 graduate diploma in New Zealand and already hold a bachelor's degree will be eligible to apply for a Post Study Work Visa.

The bachelor's degree can have been obtained either in New Zealand or overseas, and there is no limit on how long ago it was awarded.

Students must complete the graduate diploma through full-time study in New Zealand and remain enrolled for the entire duration of the programme.

Eligible graduates may receive a Post Study Work Visa for up to one year, depending on the length of their graduate diploma studies.

What this means for international students

The new rules make graduate diploma programmes a more attractive option for international students who already hold a bachelor's degree and are looking to gain specialised knowledge or change career direction.

Previously, some graduate diploma holders had limited post-study work options. Under the new policy, many will gain access to an open work visa after graduation, improving their ability to gain New Zealand work experience.

For students whose qualifications do not meet Post Study Work Visa requirements, the new six-month Short-term Graduate Work Visa provides an additional opportunity to find employment and explore longer-term visa options.

Choosing the right programme

Students considering study in New Zealand should carefully review whether their chosen qualification qualifies for a Post Study Work Visa or only for the new Short-term Graduate Work Visa.

Prospective students interested in working in New Zealand after graduation should also pay close attention to qualification level, programme duration, and how their studies align with New Zealand's labour market needs.

With these changes, New Zealand is expanding post-study opportunities for many international students while maintaining a strong focus on graduate employability and skills demand.
