The Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) educates students on how societal and systemic elements intersect with individual behaviors and biological aspects to shape health outcomes, disease patterns, and recovery processes. This focus stems from growing awareness that social and structural determinants (such as discrimination, living conditions, economic status, interpersonal connections, and cultural norms) significantly impact public health and disease patterns, serving both as contributors to health risks and as potential avenues for health promotion. SBS equips learners with tools to advance health fairness and societal equity, including methods for assessing and creating comprehensive strategies that address health obstacles across all life stages.
