The Yale School of Music's composition program draws global students with its world-renowned faculty and abundant performance venues across campus. While emphasizing acoustic composition, the program fosters exploration of digital music, recording technologies, and analysis of both tonal and atonal works. Students are encouraged to maintain their instrumental or conducting practice alongside composition studies. Regular performances of student works occur through solo recitals, chamber groups, orchestras, and the New Music New Haven series. Composition majors must create sufficient material for a complete recital during their studies. The program also hosts prominent visiting composers who engage with students through specialized seminars.
