Yale School of Music horn students receive individualized instruction while also joining weekly studio seminars that explore focused subjects like orchestral excerpts, études, or transcribed vocal works. The program emphasizes mastering diverse musical styles, spanning from Baroque to modern compositions. Beyond solo performances, horn players engage in chamber music—a cornerstone of Yale's musical training. They also perform with multiple ensembles, including the New Music New Haven series and the Yale Philharmonia orchestra. These experiences allow students to interpret varied repertoire under the guidance of principal conductor Peter Oundjian and distinguished visiting conductors. Leigh Hall's third-floor horn studio functions as a hub for practice, rehearsals, and musical research, equipped with four period instruments (two Classical and two Baroque horns) plus a triple horn, all accessible for student use.
