The MEM program mandates that students concentrate on a specialized field, while maintaining the adaptability to customize their coursework to explore other disciplines. The predefined specializations encompass diverse subject areas, carefully structured to equip students for leadership roles and professional opportunities in current environmental management sectors. Students are advised to select from the pre-established specializations. However, the MEM curriculum also incorporates an alternative option for enhanced flexibility in unique situations. Given the interdisciplinary character of environmental management and its ever-changing challenges, creating a one-size-fits-all curriculum is impractical—some students have precise objectives and methodologies in mind. Consequently, the MEM program offers the possibility of crafting a personalized specialization. Those opting for a self-designed path must present a detailed proposal, including their reasoning, a suggested study plan of at least six courses, and endorsement from a faculty advisor. This proposal must be reviewed and approved by the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs by the conclusion of the student's first academic year. It should clearly explain how the self-designed specialization fulfills the student's educational aspirations in ways the existing options cannot. Although students may propose a title for their specialization, only "Self-Designed" will be noted on the official Yale transcript, not the individualized title.
