The joint-degree program enables students to earn an MBA alongside a PhD in sciences or humanities from Yale's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Candidates can combine their MBA with doctoral studies across diverse fields including biological sciences, engineering, applied sciences, humanities, physical sciences, and social sciences (excluding management disciplines). This dual-degree pathway typically takes about seven years to complete - significantly less than the eight-plus years needed if pursuing the degrees independently. Each student's program is carefully tailored to their academic goals, with most planning finalized during admission. Requirements include one dedicated year completing Yale SOM's integrated MBA curriculum and another year taking courses at both schools. Most students commence their full-time MBA year after successfully passing their PhD qualifying examinations. The program's customized structure allows candidates to complete both degrees in roughly seven years, compared to the eight or more years required for separate degree paths. Academic plans are personalized during admission, with students fulfilling one concentrated year in Yale SOM's MBA program and an additional year of cross-school coursework. The full-time MBA year generally begins post-PhD qualifying exams.
