The MAR program in Second Temple Judaism centers on studying non-canonical Jewish texts from the era between the Hebrew Bible and the Mishnah. As standalone Ph.D. programs in this field don't exist, students complement their studies with Hebrew Bible, New Testament, or rabbinic Judaism coursework. The curriculum demands advanced proficiency in Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic, while recommending Syriac and Latin as supplementary languages. Beyond core biblical studies, students may explore rabbinic Judaism through Religious Studies courses or participate in interdisciplinary programs like Classics and Archaia. This program aims to provide comprehensive knowledge of Jewish history and literature from the biblical period through the Mishnaic era, emphasizing original language study of Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts. Requirements include four courses each in Advanced Hebrew, additional ancient languages, and historical-literary studies, plus four electives.
