The Hebrew Bible concentration equips students for rigorous academic exploration of biblical texts, their languages, and historical settings. The program includes 1) instruction in Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic, along with other pertinent ancient languages, 2) diverse interpretive courses covering both specific texts and broader themes, 3) studies of the ancient Near Eastern/Mediterranean world and the evolution of biblical interpretation. Learners often access Yale's extensive resources across departments like Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, Religious Studies, Classics, and various museum collections. Requirements include eighteen Hebrew credit hours, six Greek credit hours, foundational Old and New Testament courses, plus six credit hours of exegetical or historical electives. This program frequently serves as preparation for doctoral studies in biblical scholarship and related disciplines.
