Ethics focuses on assessing character and behavior. It explores the qualities we should cultivate, how we ought to interact with others, and the societal frameworks we collectively shape and inherit. The Ethics concentration is an interdisciplinary program that equips students with knowledge of Christian theological ethics and modern social-ethical theories. Ethics courses tackle topics like virtuous living, equity in society, and collective welfare, examining both historical perspectives and current issues ranging from migration to ecological fairness. Students are urged to explore courses across theological fields and relevant University departments beyond the Divinity School, such as Religious Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, Forestry, and Law. The Yale Interdisciplinary Center for Bioethics provides additional opportunities for engaged students. A minimum of eighteen credit hours must be completed in ethics, typically alongside six credits in biblical studies and twelve in history and theology. This program prepares students for academic and professional leadership, with alumni advancing to prestigious doctoral programs or careers in non-profits, activism, secondary education, media, and legal practice.
