Graduate students can choose between the Ph.D. program or a one-year M.A. program. Those pursuing a Ph.D. will obtain their M.A. as part of their doctoral journey. Our Public Humanities M.A. concentration is exclusively available to Ph.D. candidates. M.A. candidates complete 7 term courses, which include a writing project, and fulfill language requirements while taking identical courses to doctoral students. This degree does not offer financial assistance. The American Studies program provides graduate students with three teaching opportunities, typically involving six semesters of instruction (two semesters each in their third and fourth years, plus two semesters in their sixth year after the University Dissertation Fellowship [UDF], provided they maintain satisfactory progress).
Applicants must have completed your undergraduate degree (bachelor's or equivalent) or will have completed it prior to your intended matriculation date at Yale.
