The Old Testament/Hebrew Bible (OT/HB) represents one of the ten academic disciplines within the Department of Religious Studies. This OT/HB program caters to students aiming to pursue teaching or research careers focused on various aspects of the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible, including its historical context, literary examination, interpretation, reception history, and related areas. Typically, students explore all these dimensions before selecting a specialization, while also undertaking advanced studies in Biblical Hebrew and related ancient languages. The program encourages students to utilize Yale's interdisciplinary resources, including Judaic Studies, EMWAR, Comparative Literature, NELC, and Anthropology. Those primarily interested in Hebrew language studies should explore doctoral options in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations. These guidelines outline the OT/HB program structure and help students craft personalized study plans. Each student collaborates with the Assistant Director of Graduate Studies for OT/HB (Prof. Joel Baden), the Director of Graduate Studies (Prof. Linn Tonstad), and the full OT/HB faculty to tailor their academic path. Early consultation with OT/HB faculty is highly recommended to clarify prerequisites, requirements, and to develop an optimal preparation strategy for qualifying exams and future research.
