The Department has contributed to shaping art history into a field that examines diverse artistic expressions and visual traditions worldwide. Over the years, Yale's faculty have revolutionized the understanding of American arts (including Pre-Columbian works and the spectrum of North American art and architecture from colonial to modern periods), African art and its diaspora, Asian and Islamic artistic traditions, and European art spanning ancient to contemporary eras. These areas, among others, remain at the heart of our ongoing academic pursuits and instruction.
