The History Department's Ph.D. program prepares exceptional scholars for academic careers in research, education, and other professional paths. Each year, the department admits approximately 22 doctoral candidates, with additional students joining through combined degree programs and HSHM. All accepted Ph.D. candidates receive comprehensive financial support from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. History doctoral students must complete ten courses within their initial two years, typically enrolling in six courses (including Approaching History - HIST 500) during the first year. In their second year, with advisor and DGS approval, students may take four to six courses. The program requires two research seminars featuring original primary source papers, along with two seminars outside the student's specialization period for all graduate students.
Applicants must have completed your undergraduate degree (bachelor's or equivalent) or will have completed it prior to your intended matriculation date at Yale.
