Yale's Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures has consistently ranked among the nation's top German studies programs. The department focuses on developing analytical reading skills through examining both classic and lesser-known German literary works, while also promoting interdisciplinary exploration in areas like critical theory, philosophy, comparative literature, and the histories of science, law, and political thought. The German/Film program highlights media studies, which is also integrated throughout the department. Within our collaborative academic environment, faculty members guide each student in crafting a personalized curriculum that aligns with their specific interests in German culture and intellectual traditions. We strive to maintain academic flexibility while ensuring students earn degrees that fully prepare them for professional success. Our graduates have achieved exceptional placement rates throughout the program's history.
