The Yale English Department provides an extensive graduate program, featuring courses that cover all historical periods of British literature, American literature from its beginnings, and modern interdisciplinary fields (including feminism, cultural studies, post-colonialism, and LGBTQ studies). The Department prepares future college educators for diverse settings, from research-focused institutions to public universities and small liberal arts colleges. Emphasizing pluralism in both subject matter and methodology, faculty are dedicated to equipping students for success in a rigorous academic field. Undergraduate teaching is integrated into graduate training to strengthen this preparation. Collaboration with other programs further enriches the Department's diversity. It maintains partnerships with African-American Studies, Film Studies, Renaissance Studies (offering joint degrees), as well as American Studies, Comparative Literature, Medieval Studies, and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Many faculty hold joint appointments, and numerous courses are cross-listed. Students are encouraged to craft balanced programs that blend focused expertise with broad academic exploration.
Applicants must have completed your undergraduate degree (bachelor's or equivalent) or will have completed it prior to your intended matriculation date at Yale.
