The Classics Department at UNC Chapel Hill merges traditional philology, archaeology, and art studies with contemporary critical methods, providing graduate students with a comprehensive, interdisciplinary perspective on ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. Their graduate offerings include MA degrees in Greek, Latin, and Classical Archaeology, as well as PhD programs in Classics, Classics with Historical Focus, Classical and Medieval Latin, and Classical Archaeology. While all students must earn an MA before progressing to the PhD, the department exclusively accepts applicants committed to completing the doctoral program, as there is no standalone MA option.
