Exploring East Asian cinema demands extensive expertise in both film studies and the region's history and culture, making it an ideal subject for interdisciplinary research that bridges film and Asian literature or cultural studies. Yale's Combined Ph.D. Program in Film Studies and East Asian Languages and Literatures seeks to develop specialists in Asian cinema with comprehensive training in both disciplines. This fully integrated degree program treats each department as the student's primary focus, with mutually reinforcing requirements. Candidates must acquire deep understanding not just of East Asian film, but also of East Asian literature beyond cinema, and global film traditions outside East Asia. Graduates can pursue diverse career paths in either film studies or East Asian literature departments, or other academic settings.
