Undergraduates have multiple choices when dedicating their major electives to deeper literary studies. Typically structured around genres, themes, historical periods, or national, cultural, and ethnic perspectives, the English Department offers a wide range of upper-division literature courses on a regular basis.
Upper-division literature courses often attract students whose interest was sparked by ILP coursework. Those pursuing creative writing or rhetoric and composition frequently enroll to explore the historical roots of their craft or to examine contemporary literary trends—sometimes both. Students drawn to literary theory or cultural studies select courses that emphasize these approaches in text analysis. Nearly all students complete at least one course focused on modern literature, whether from England, Hawaii, the U.S. mainland, New Zealand, Ghana, Canada, India, Samoa, or other regions where English is a literary language.
