The joint PhD program in Classics and Comparative Literature at Yale provides diverse coursework that blends the adaptability of comparative studies with the demanding precision of classical philology. Known for its interdisciplinary approach, Yale gives students in this program a direct opportunity to experience this methodology. During the initial two years, participants fulfill coursework for both disciplines, gaining expertise in contemporary literary theory while honing their Greek and Latin skills through immersive study of original classical texts. The curriculum allows significant flexibility, as numerous modern language and literature courses qualify for the Comparative Literature requirements. Faculty from both departments also offer classes that connect classical works with global literary traditions. Recent course examples include Vergil's Aeneid, The Question of Form, Mimesis in Classical Athens, and Rhetoric and Poetry, alongside Renaissance literature courses that often incorporate classical influences.
Applicants must have completed your undergraduate degree (bachelor's or equivalent) or will have completed it prior to your intended matriculation date at Yale.
