The University of Chicago has offered Arabic language instruction since 1893. Its Arabic Language and Literature program equips students with foundational knowledge in either Classical or Modern Arabic studies, while exposing them to key historical eras (spanning from pre-Islamic times to contemporary periods) and literary forms (including poetry, prose, criticism, and visual arts). The curriculum for both specializations prioritizes working directly with Arabic source materials for both coursework and research. Additionally, participants must show proficiency in another Middle Eastern or South Asian language or develop such skills during their studies.
