Doctoral candidates admitted to the program receive comprehensive five-year funding packages covering tuition through teaching appointments and fellowships. All enrolled PhD students are granted health coverage and a living stipend. Additional details about financial support options can be found through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The initial two years focus on coursework, requiring completion of twelve graduate-level classes. During year three, students start teaching responsibilities, undergo oral exams, and develop dissertation proposals. Year four typically involves continued teaching while advancing research and dissertation writing. All candidates automatically qualify for the University Dissertation Fellowship (UDF), usually utilized in their fifth or sixth year, providing dedicated time for dissertation completion. Numerous students successfully obtain external funding, enabling them to postpone their UDF to year six and extend their research period.
Applicants must have completed your undergraduate degree (bachelor's or equivalent) or will have completed it prior to your intended matriculation date at Yale.
