The Yale School of Music's composition program draws global talent with its world-renowned faculty and abundant performance venues across campus. Specializing in acoustic composition, the program also fosters exploration of electronic music, recording technologies, and analysis of both tonal and atonal works. Students are encouraged to maintain their instrumental or conducting practice alongside composition studies. Their works receive regular performances through student soloists, chamber groups, orchestras, and the New Music New Haven concert series. Composition majors must create sufficient material for a complete recital during their studies. The program frequently hosts acclaimed visiting composers who engage with students through specialized seminars.
