The Bachelor of Arts/Master of Music dual-degree program caters to exceptionally skilled instrumental performers seeking both a comprehensive liberal arts education and advanced musical training. Applicants must gain admission to Yale College and pass a separate audition with the School of Music, which can occur either before starting at Yale or during their third undergraduate year. Typically, students fulfill their Bachelor of Arts requirements in the initial four years, then complete the Master of Music degree in their fifth year. By graduation, all B.A./M.M. participants must demonstrate proficiency in Analysis and Musicianship, Music History (through exams or coursework), keyboard skills, and nonperformance course distribution. To track progress, students take placement tests during their senior year and consult regularly with the deputy dean for academics and the academic studies coordinator for guidance on performance commitments and academic planning.

Qualification Requirements

Request recommendations from two teachers who have taught you in core academic subjects (e.g. English, Foreign Language, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies) who know you well, and who have seen you at your best. It is preferable, but not required, that recommendations come from teachers who have taught you during your final or next-to-final year of secondary school. Your counselor or other school official should submit a School Report with an official transcript that includes all your secondary school courses. If a question on the School Report form is not applicable to your secondary school, leave it blank. In response to the extraordinary circumstances associated with the pandemic, Yale is temporarily suspending its requirement that first-year and transfer applicants submit results from the ACT or SAT. The change will be in effect during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 admissions cycles for applicants who intend to matriculate in fall 2021 or fall 2022. 100 on the internet-based TOEFL. 25 on each of the three sections of the paper-and-pencil TOEFL Paper-delivered Test. IELTS scores of 7.
