The Yale School of Music's composition program draws global talent with its world-renowned faculty and abundant performance venues across campus. Specializing in acoustic composition, the program also fosters exploration of electronic music, recording technologies, and analysis of both tonal and atonal works. Students are encouraged to maintain their instrumental or conducting practice alongside composition studies. Regular performances of student works occur through solo recitals, chamber groups, orchestral presentations, and the New Music New Haven series. Composition majors must create sufficient material for a complete recital before graduation. The program hosts prominent visiting composers for seminars, while alumni have earned prestigious honors including Pulitzer Prizes, Grammy Awards, and Grawemeyer Awards, along with residencies with major orchestras and arts organizations.
