The History major is designed for students who recognize that understanding the past is essential to influencing the future. Through historical studies, students examine centuries of human innovation and experience across global and personal scales. As History majors, they develop skills in compelling storytelling, critical analysis, and constructing arguments that resonate with diverse audiences. Leveraging Yale's extensive library collections, they produce groundbreaking original research. The program encourages students to examine politics, governance, sexuality, economics, culture, intellectual pursuits, warfare, and societal issues through a broad humanistic lens rather than a restrictive technical perspective. Among Yale College's most sought-after and varied majors, History spans nearly all regions and eras of world history. This discipline provides exceptional preparation for diverse career paths such as law, journalism, finance, education, public service, activism, and creative fields. Highly qualified students may pursue a combined B.A./M.A. program, earning both degrees within eight terms. Refer to Academic Regulations, section L (Special Academic Arrangements) for details on simultaneous degree awards. Prospective candidates should meet with the Director of Undergraduate Studies before their sixth term to discuss History department requirements.
