The Portuguese major is a liberal arts program designed to build proficiency in Portuguese while offering students an extensive understanding of the literature and cultures of Portuguese-speaking regions, including Portugal, Brazil, and parts of Africa and Asia. All new students, except those with no prior exposure to Portuguese, must complete the department's placement assessment, which evaluates reading, writing, speaking, and listening abilities. Visit the department's website for test schedules and specifics. To fulfill the Portuguese major, students must complete ten courses beyond prerequisites, with a minimum of five focused on Portuguese-speaking world literatures or cultures. Up to four approved courses from related disciplines—such as other languages, anthropology, history, art history, or study abroad programs—may count toward the major with the director of undergraduate studies' approval.
