The vocal program specializing in early music caters to singers aspiring to build concert careers, with an emphasis on historical repertoire, oratorio, art song, modern compositions, and small ensemble vocal works. Participants benefit from weekly one-on-one voice instruction with Professor James Taylor, complemented by rigorous coaching sessions with Tomoko Nakayama and Jeffrey Grossman. The curriculum includes weekly vocal seminars, training in historical performance techniques, language pronunciation, and stagecraft. Students gain exposure through masterclasses led by celebrated global conductors and artists. Voice students at the Institute of Sacred Music join interdisciplinary weekly discussions with peers and faculty from related programs. These vocalists also constitute the foundation of Yale's prestigious Schola Cantorum ensemble, performing repertoire spanning from Renaissance pieces to contemporary commissions. Under the leadership of principal conductor Professor David Hill and guest conductor Masaaki Suzuki, the ensemble provides members with solo performance opportunities in significant works, as well as touring and recording experiences that enhance professional development.
