Engineering applications require materials exhibiting precise property combinations, shaped by their structural makeup, chemical composition, and manufacturing processes. Doctoral research examines these materials across varying scales - from nanoscale investigations of advanced materials to microscopic analysis of key structural features, extending to macroscopic studies of conventional engineering materials. Materials research faculty specialize in creating and analyzing metal, ceramic, and polymer-based composites, nanoscale fabrication and examination, energy material systems, computational modeling, interface chemistry and mechanics research, bio-inspired solid materials, and medical material innovations.
