The Sociology Major equips you to tackle urgent societal challenges by combining analytical thinking with practical engagement. You'll explore group dynamics and social relationships through examining frameworks, cultural standards, and belief systems to gain insightful perspectives on human social behavior. Courses covering subjects from racial, economic, and gender disparities to economic systems, migration patterns, urban development, and ecological concerns will help you link personal realities with broader societal matters while investigating equity initiatives and transformative movements.
You'll study foundational texts by influential scholars including Karl Marx, W.E.B. Du Bois, C. Wright Mills, Patricia Hill Collins, Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, and Mary Romero to grasp core theories and academic heritage. Furthermore, you'll acquire skills in performing responsible social research, interpreting findings, and presenting scholarly work. The program also offers an accelerated pathway through Worcester State's 4+1 option, allowing you to obtain both a sociology bachelor's degree and a nonprofit management master's within five years.
