William Paterson University's graduate-level ESL Alternate Route Certificate Program provides coursework, workshops, and hands-on supervision to prepare students for New Jersey state certification in teaching English as a Second Language. Prospective students must possess a Certificate of Eligibility (CE) in ESL issued by the New Jersey Department of Education to enroll. Participants may start as non-degree students prior to full admission, but must secure full-time ESL teaching positions to complete this alternative certification pathway. This 22-credit, two-year hybrid program combines on-campus, online, evening, and weekend course offerings. Participants receive in-class mentoring from university supervisors and participate in reflective online seminars throughout each term to enhance their teaching practice.
