The Jazz Studies Program in the Department of Music stands out among collegiate offerings. It ranks among the rare programs nationwide that truly prioritize small-ensemble performance and maintain an authentic dedication to jazz heritage. The faculty consists of top-tier New York-area artist-educators who are unmatched in their field. This program creates an immersive jazz atmosphere where students gain direct insight into the professional jazz scene and what it takes to build a thriving music career.
Prospective students for the William Paterson Jazz Major Program must demonstrate not only musical ability but also strong initiative, self-direction, and adaptability. Our jazz majors represent diverse geographic backgrounds, hailing from across America and around the globe. While many exceptional freshmen join us directly from U.S. high schools, we equally welcome transfer applications from students currently attending other institutions or conservatories.
