The College of the Environment's Geography/Social Studies program offers comprehensive training across multiple disciplines including Geography, Environmental Studies, History, Economics, Anthropology, and Political Science. As a Geography/Social Studies student, you'll gain versatile skills applicable to diverse career opportunities such as urban planning, teaching, environmental organizations, business sectors, tourism, geographic information systems, public service, and transportation. Students in this program are strongly advised to complement their studies with a minor in fields like Environmental Studies, GIS, Energy Policy, East Asian or Canadian-American Studies, or foreign languages. This program fulfills Washington State's teaching endorsement criteria and equips graduates for both traditional and alternative educational environments, with or without additional Woodring College certification. Graduates may also pursue advanced studies in Geography, Education, or Environmental Education.

This major fulfills the academic requirements for those aspiring to teach Geography and Social Studies in middle and high schools (grades 5-12) in either public or private institutions. While Secondary Education students seeking Social Studies endorsement may select this major, pursuing a teaching certificate remains optional. Those interested in Secondary certification must apply separately to Woodring College of Education's programs, typically during their senior year or after graduation.
