Geography examines spatial patterns, interactions, and dynamics within human-environment systems. It explores how historical and modern societies shape both natural and constructed landscapes, with humans serving as key drivers of physical, social, cultural, and economic transformations worldwide. A Geography curriculum enables students to analyze Earth's diverse physical and human landscapes, their evolution through natural forces and human intervention, and the long-term viability of current practices amid urbanization, globalization, and climate shifts.
Cal State East Bay's Geography BS program offers three specialized tracks alongside core requirements: Resources and Sustainability, Regions and Culture, and Spatial Techniques. These concentrations allow students to seamlessly combine their studies with complementary programs like Environmental Studies, International Studies, Sustainability Certification, or GIS/Cartography Certification, while also facilitating study abroad opportunities. The Geography BS delivers a multifaceted education crucial for navigating our globalized, environmentally changing world - an era scientists term the Anthropocene. Graduates gain versatile skills for careers in environmental management, urban planning, sustainable development, or spatial analysis, or for advanced studies in related fields. The 43-47 unit program includes 18 lower-division credits (aligned with California Community College transfer requirements) and 25-29 upper-division credits tailored to each student's academic pathway.
