Earning this major leads to a Bachelor of Arts in Education. Graduates often pursue careers as paraeducators or in fields outside traditional schools, including health services, social services, and non-profit organizations, though this path does not lead to teacher certification. With guidance from their advisor, students select a specialization and create a customized study plan to prepare for working with individuals with disabilities in diverse environments.
Numerous professionals engage with people with disabilities across different contexts without needing the specialized teaching expertise required for special education instructors. Nevertheless, to competently advocate for and assist those with disabilities, practitioners must possess comprehensive knowledge of key subjects related to disability support services. The Department of Education Leadership and Inclusive Teaching maintains that professionals should facilitate equal access to inclusive community resources for individuals with disabilities. The Disability and Advocacy major equips future professionals with core competencies for working across educational, residential, agency, and community settings. Based on their career aspirations, students in this program can select from multiple specialization tracks.
