A biomedical engineering degree stands out as one of the most adaptable qualifications for creating an impact where engineering and medicine converge. Professionals in this field engage in clinical research, contribute to the medical device or pharmaceutical sectors, serve in government bodies like the FDA or US Patent and Trademark Office, and frequently advance their education through graduate studies in BME, medicine, business, or legal disciplines. Where might your educational path lead? This demanding curriculum equips you for roles in the healthcare sector and serves as an excellent foundation for pursuing graduate, medical, or legal studies. Students majoring in Biomedical Engineering can opt for our Six-year Engineering-Law program, enabling them to practice as patent attorneys within the medical industry while reducing both time and educational expenses. The contributions of biomedical engineers have a direct influence on global health outcomes and quality of life. Equipped with expertise in engineering and biological systems, these professionals drive innovation in medical advancements, from pioneering surgical tools to personalized cancer therapies. Through the conception and creation of medical devices and methodologies, biomedical engineers are reshaping healthcare practices.
Our foundational coursework covers the breadth of biomedical engineering, including subjects like bioinstrumentation, physiological engineering, biomechanics, and biomaterials. To translate classroom theory into practice, you will undertake four laboratory courses designed to refine your experimental capabilities. During your third and fourth years, you will select four specialized "sequence electives" to focus on a specific area. Available sequences encompass Bioinstrumentation, Biomaterials, Biomedical Micro and Nanodevices, Business, Cell and Tissue Engineering, Manufacturing, Premedical Science, and Prosthetics and Orthotics. The program culminates in a two-semester Senior Design Project. Additionally, you can participate in a distinctive summer study abroad seminar in Guatemala focused on Global Health and Technology.
