Gaining admission to Western Michigan University's music performance program requires successfully completing the school's audition process, conducted every November, January, and February. As a performance student, you'll receive intensive training in instrumental, keyboard, or vocal disciplines while carving out your unique artistic identity. WMU's program provides exceptional performance opportunities both on campus and at renowned venues worldwide. Our graduates frequently continue their studies at elite institutions or pursue careers as collaborative artists, educators, and music directors. Alumni have achieved success in diverse fields including Broadway productions, opera coaching, jazz performance, composition, arts management, music therapy, and ensemble leadership.
Music performance majors at WMU qualify for both talent-based scholarships through the School of Music and university-wide academic awards. The program opens doors to numerous professional pathways, all emphasizing rigorous training and exceptional artistic standards.
WMU's performing ensembles play a vital role in enriching the university's cultural and educational landscape. Through national and international tours across continents including North and South America, Europe, and Asia, these ensembles have significantly enhanced WMU's global reputation for artistic excellence.
A first-year applicant is a student who is applying for admission and who has not attempted or earned any college credit after graduating from high school/secondary school (or earned equivalent).
