To enroll in Western Michigan University's music education program, candidates must pass the institution's audition and evaluation process, conducted every November, January, and February. The program offers two specialization tracks: Choral/General focus or Instrumental focus. As a WMU music education major, you'll need to dedicate at least five days weekly for one semester to student teaching. This includes participating in both academic and extracurricular activities at your assigned school.
Additionally, students can access important networking and career growth prospects through various groups like the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Sigma Alpha Iota, National Association for Music Education, Michigan School Band and Orchestra, and Vocal Music Associations.
A first-year applicant is a student who is applying for admission and who has not attempted or earned any college credit after graduating from high school/secondary school (or earned equivalent).
