The University of Maryland's Art Education Program stands out for its rigorous curriculum and hands-on training, equipping aspiring art teachers for modern diverse classrooms. The Art Education/Studio Art Program follows the artist-teacher model, enabling students to cultivate their artistic skills while training to instruct art across all grade levels. It offers comprehensive studies in liberal arts alongside specialized training in studio techniques, art history, modern teaching methods, curriculum development, and classroom leadership. This approach harmonizes artistic creation, historical context, educational principles, and practical teaching requirements for tomorrow's educators.
Guided by experienced faculty, students gain practical teaching exposure across all grade levels in every art education class, including participation in a community After School Arts Program during their junior year. Seniors undertake an intensive Year Long Internship, spending weekly time in assigned elementary and secondary schools during fall to familiarize themselves with school environments, mentor teachers, and daily educational responsibilities. In spring, they return to these placements for full-time student teaching under the same mentors.
