Western Michigan University's philosophy department ranks among the nation's elite, with its graduate program frequently recognized among the world's top 10 master's programs. The program excels in three key disciplines: Epistemology and philosophy of science, Metaphysics and philosophy of mind, and both Theoretical and applied ethics. Philosophy students at WMU develop essential abilities in public speaking, debate, critical analysis, and logical thinking. The curriculum teaches students to formulate and articulate original theories and arguments. Offering considerable flexibility, the program permits independent research while also encouraging interdisciplinary coursework across WMU's various academic departments.
A first-year applicant is a student who is applying for admission and who has not attempted or earned any college credit after graduating from high school/secondary school (or earned equivalent).
