The WIU Chemistry Department provides a Bachelor of Science program in Biochemistry. This discipline explores the chemical foundations of life, bridging chemistry and biology, requiring expertise in both areas. Biochemistry examines chemical reactions that build and break down biological compounds, along with mechanisms governing movement, cellular communication, and organism reproduction. Advances in biochemical understanding have revolutionized drug development and agricultural innovations through genetic engineering techniques. Biochemistry stands as a distinct chemical specialty that has expanded dramatically in recent decades, particularly in biotech applications. Remarkably, much of our current biochemical understanding comes from contemporary researchers. Studying biochemistry reveals both the incredible variety of life forms and the shared metabolic pathways among them. This field significantly impacts diverse sectors including healthcare and farming. As we decode disease mechanisms, novel therapies emerge. Scientists are engineering pest-resistant crops and herbicide-tolerant plant varieties. Research breakthroughs quickly translate into real-world solutions. WIU's Chemistry Department holds American Chemical Society (ACS) accreditation for both chemistry and biochemistry programs. With 120,000+ members, ACS ranks as the nation's largest scientific organization. Beyond program certification, it publishes leading journals like "Chemical Abstracts." Among 2,000 U.S. chemistry programs, fewer than 500 achieve ACS certification standards.
Hold a credential that is comparable to a U.S. high school diploma
Have a grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. All marks and scores will be converted to a 4.0 grading scale.
Official high school (secondary school) exams, transcripts, or individual mark sheets sent from the school to International Admissions. If these documents are not in English, an official word for word English translation must be submitted with the original documents.
