The Biochemistry BS Program shares similarities with the Chemistry BS, yet places greater focus on advanced studies in biochemistry and life sciences, featuring an intensive biochemistry lab component. This curriculum is ideal for aspiring professional scientists and those planning graduate studies in Biochemistry or related research areas. Chemistry and Biochemistry are dynamic fields that explore matter's properties to address critical global challenges like energy, sustainability, and healthcare. Progress in these domains demands not only expertise in chemical and biochemical principles but also the ability to collaborate across disciplines and tackle projects that transcend conventional boundaries. Chemistry and Biochemistry are interconnected molecular sciences. Chemistry examines matter's transformations across all states and environments while creating novel chemical substances and characteristics. Biochemistry investigates chemical and physicochemical phenomena within living systems. Both disciplines address fundamental theoretical questions alongside practical applications.
A bachelor's degree in chemistry or biochemistry opens diverse career opportunities in industry, healthcare, academia, and beyond. Many UMD graduates work in sectors like chemicals, energy, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology, developing innovative medicines, consumer goods, advanced materials, or conducting analytical assessments of products and environmental samples. Others secure positions at government laboratories (e.g., NIH, FDA, NIST, EPA, NRL). Those pursuing science education can obtain K-12 teaching certification through UMD's College of Education while completing their Chemistry and Biochemistry degrees.
High school students and students with fewer than 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours of university-level credit beyond secondary school should apply as freshman applicants.
