Western Illinois University's Music Therapy Program stands as one of just two institutions in Illinois providing bachelor's or Second Bachelor's degree (equivalency) programs in this field. Established in 1974, the music therapy curriculum has seen significant growth in recent years. The university's School of Music holds accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), while the therapy program itself is recognized by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA). Graduates earning their music therapy bachelor's degree from WIU qualify to take the Certification Exam for Music Therapists, paving the way to become Board Certified Music Therapists (MT-BC) through the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT). Both instructors and students actively participate in the Illinois Association for Music Therapists.
