The behavioral neuroscience specialization represents the most recent and rapidly expanding field within the Psychology Department. Learners in this discipline collaborate with seasoned faculty to investigate how biological factors influence behavior. This program equips students for research careers across academic institutions, medical schools, government agencies, and private sector organizations. Our alumni typically excel in research, focusing on publication success and securing external funding. We emphasize developing mentoring abilities, ensuring graduates can effectively teach their expertise to future students. Program participants examine intricate relationships between neural processes and physiological functions. The curriculum covers fundamental neuroscience topics like neuroanatomy, behavioral methodologies, data analysis, and ethical considerations. Specialized coursework may include behavioral endocrinology, neuroinflammatory processes, pharmacological effects on behavior, and immune-nervous system interactions. Participants work directly with faculty advisors to create research initiatives, potentially partnering with other WVU departments or external institutions. Hands-on research forms the core of this training program - after mastering foundational techniques, students quickly progress to designing and executing independent studies.
