History Ph.D. candidates at West Virginia University develop their academic program in collaboration with faculty mentors and the Graduate Studies Director, selecting one primary specialization along with three secondary fields (including at least one outside their core research focus). The History Department also promotes doctoral work that adopts transnational and comparative approaches.
The primary specialization serves as both the student's key research domain and potential teaching expertise. Students select this focus area with guidance from their principal faculty advisor, who supervises both preparation and examinations. While rooted in dissertation topics, this specialization should also encompass comprehensive knowledge of relevant historical scholarship.
