Wayne State's political science doctoral program equips intellectually curious students for academic, governmental, non-profit, and private-sector research careers. Earning a Ph.D. in political science demonstrates both mastery of key theories, research findings, and disciplinary discussions, as well as the capacity to conceive, design, and execute original research projects.
Our Ph.D. candidates represent diverse backgrounds, with numerous mid-career professionals, and the program supports both full-time and part-time enrollment. Typically completed in five to six years, graduates pursue rewarding careers across academic and non-academic fields. Competitive fellowships and teaching assistantships are available for full-time students, while part-time students may qualify for the tuition-focused Graduate Professional Scholarship. Faculty members occasionally offer research assistantship opportunities as well.
Doctoral candidates undergo comprehensive training in research methodologies, specializing in one primary and two secondary fields. The program covers seven concentrations: American government, comparative politics, political theory, public administration, public policy, urban politics, and international relations. With program approval, students can transfer up to 30 credits from previous graduate coursework.
