The Immunology and Infectious Diseases PhD program offers comprehensive training in immunology and the study of host-pathogen relationships across bacterial, parasitic, and viral infections affecting both animals and humans. This interdisciplinary program benefits from collaborations with the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology, the Paul G. Allen School for Global Health, the School of Molecular Biosciences, and the USDA-ARS Animal Disease Research Unit. Students pursue dissertation research under the guidance of renowned faculty known for their collaborative work in infectious disease studies. The curriculum is customized to each student's academic background and professional aspirations, combining foundational coursework with specialized literature-based studies. Hands-on laboratory research forms the cornerstone of the program. Working closely with their advisor and committee, students design and execute focused research projects. Weekly seminars featuring presentations by students, faculty, and guest researchers foster skills in data analysis, experimental methodology, and scientific discourse. Participants may also engage with the Integrative Programs in Biomedical Sciences (iPBS, https://vetmed.wsu.edu/education/graduate-degrees/). The program emphasizes original research leading to peer-reviewed publications, which serve as the basis for the PhD dissertation. Degree completion involves a public research presentation followed by an oral defense.
