Neuroscience explores the nervous system, from fundamental molecular processes to complex functions like behavior and autonomic regulation. WSU's Neuroscience PhD program combines classroom analysis of key research papers, specialized courses in scientific thinking, and training in grant writing and presentation techniques. The program primarily focuses on conducting original research, where students formulate and execute their own scientific inquiries. These projects are developed with mentorship from WSU's distinguished, well-funded neuroscience faculty. The graduate faculty spans various departments, colleges, and campuses, offering students diverse mentorship opportunities and research topics. Neuroscience graduate students also engage in initiatives organized by the Integrated Program in Biomedical Sciences (iPBS), which shares a foundational curriculum in the first semester—including lab rotations, professional growth, and courses in scientific logic and data analysis. After this initial semester, students can switch to any participating program, such as Molecular Bioscience, Immunology and Infectious Diseases, or Combined Residency PhD Programs (Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Microbiology).
