WSU's cultural anthropology graduate program focuses on three key areas within the subdiscipline: (1) psychological and medical anthropology, (2) studies of children, family, and gender, and (3) ecological anthropology. Faculty members actively research these specialties across diverse regions including Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, North America, Oceania, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. The program provides both MA and PhD degrees, with a strong emphasis on hands-on fieldwork as a core component of graduate education.
Students pursuing MA or PhD degrees in cultural anthropology gain foundational knowledge through required courses in archaeology, evolutionary anthropology, and linguistics. They deepen their understanding of cultural anthropology through departmental electives and relevant interdisciplinary courses. The PhD program provides customized training tailored to each student's research focus and faculty expertise. Doctoral candidates work closely with advisors to develop research proposals and secure external funding for their dissertation projects.
