UC Santa Cruz's Anthropology Graduate Program ranks among the nation's top programs, celebrated for the innovative research conducted by both students and faculty. Alumni have advanced to prestigious positions at renowned academic and governmental organizations such as Cambridge University, Stanford, Yale, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

We aim to cultivate graduate students into skilled researchers capable of clear communication as educators and professionals, whether within or beyond academic settings. The program fosters close student-faculty collaboration and is structured to promote dialogue while welcoming applicants from varied educational, professional, and cultural backgrounds to pursue doctoral studies.

Earning a Ph.D. in Anthropology typically involves three years of coursework, one to two years of dissertation research (fieldwork), and one year for writing the dissertation. While the expected completion time is six years, individual timelines may vary. Applicants select one of three primary subdisciplines for specialization upon entry, with most students joining the cultural anthropology track. Limited spots are available for anthropological archaeology and biological anthropology. Though admission is exclusively for the Ph.D. program, students can earn an M.A. by meeting specific requirements during their first two years. Ideal preparation for the anthropology Ph.D. includes substantial coursework in anthropology or related fields and fluency in at least one language besides English.
